Welcome to the Georgia Tech Language Institute (GTLI) English Language Proficiency Assessment site.

Prospective J-1 Scholars and Interns

Under the regulations of the U.S. Department of State (DOS), all J-1 exchange visitors must demonstrate English-language proficiency so that they can perform their role, navigate daily life in the U.S., read and comprehend program materials, understand their rights and responsibilities, and obtain assistance when needed. At Georgia Tech, we require documented proof of English proficiency as part of eligibility for a specific J-1 program.

Depending on the category of the exchange visitor, your required level of English varies:

  • Scholar category: **High Beginner** level proficiency
  • Student Intern, Professor or Specialist categories: **Intermediate** level proficiency

Evidence may include: an assessment by the Georgia Tech Language Institute, official TOEFL/IELTS scores, or a degree from an institution where English was the language of instruction.

Please note: The Georgia Tech Language Institute administers the language assessment only. For questions about your J-1 program eligibility beyond this assessment, contact OIE. English Language Proficiency | OIE

Applicants to Graduate Programs at Georgia Tech

In addition to the accepted TOEFL iBT and IELTS Academic exams, you may satisfy Georgia Tech’s English-language proficiency requirement by completing all four 700-level English Communication courses (Reading 700, Writing 700, Listening 700, and Speaking 700) with a minimum grade of 80 % in each. This pathway is valid indefinitely — unlike test scores, which expire.

For full details on the 700-level courses and how to enroll, visit the English Proficiency | Graduate Education page. Additionally, if you need to strengthen your English skills before enrolling, you may consider the Intensive English Program (IEP) offered by the Georgia Tech Language Institute.

Please note: The Georgia Tech Language Institute offers the 700-level pathway only. We are not the Graduate Admissions office. For questions about your application or program-specific requirements beyond this pathway, please contact the Office of Graduate Education Admissions at Georgia Tech.
