Pre-MBA Program

In conjunction with the MBA program at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School, the Language Institute offers a four-week summer intensive business English program designed for international graduate students who do not speak English as a native language and are beginning an MBA program in the fall semester. The program helps students improve their ability to speak and write in English and builds student confidence to meet the communication challenges of an MBA program.

2-3 hours/week group work & individual tutorials

Course Descriptions

Clearer Speech
Work with an instructor to identify aspects of your speech that are affecting your overall clarity when you speak in English. Learn techniques that you can use to immediately boost comprehensibility.

Conversation
Improve your overall oral fluency and increase your idiomatic vocabulary. Learn appropriate ways to interrupt, compliment, offer suggestions, or show disapproval. Practice using these new expressions through discussions, role plays, and interactive activities.

Listening Comprehension Skills
Develop listening comprehension and note-taking skills for graduate lectures and current events.

Oral Presentation Skills
Build confidence in presenting information effectively in English. Improve delivery technique, organization, and diction. Learn how to prepare a formal presentation as well as speak in impromptu situations.

Reading Seminar
Improve reading comprehension skills through reading selected business articles and case studies. Develop discussion skills through this seminar class format. Emphasis will be placed on vocabulary development and fluency in communication.

Team‐Based Project
Work in teams to complete a project during the four-week program. Each group will be given a problem to solve or task to complete. The group will plan a time-line, delegate assignments, negotiate revisions, and present results during the final week. Groups will receive both group and peer feedback for their projects. An integrated language skills approach will be used throughout the course.

Writing Workshop
Practice writing reports, analyses and other writing techniques needed for successful written communication in a graduate business school. In addition to class instruction, students will have the opportunity during the program to work one-on-one with the instructor.
