Word Power Plus: Building Test Vocabulary

  • Intermediate-Advanced (500-700 Level)
  • 12 contact hours
  • 3:05-3:55 p.m. Tuesdays & Thursdays
  • Cost: $100

This course will help you learn strategies for increasing vocabulary, including use of context clues, analysis of word parts, and mnemonics. This class will familiarize you with common vocabulary question types on the GRE exam. You will learn some of the most frequently tested words on the GRE.

Making a Movie

  • Advanced (500-700 Level)
  • 12 contact hours
  • 2:05-3:55 p.m. Wednesdays
  • Cost: $100

Practice all the language skills, speaking, listening, writing, and reading, while making a class movie. Learn the basics of using movie-editing software and, make a Web site for the class film.

The movie will be about interesting places to visit around Atlanta. We start by reading about Atlanta sites to help us learn the information we'll need. Then we watch some documentary movies to help us plan our film and learn some film techniques while working on our listening skills.

Once we have a plan for our film, we will practice interviewing techniques and conduct some preliminary interviews on campus to develop our speaking skills. Next,we’ll visit some places in Atlanta to film for our movie. Finally, we'll put the film together!

In this class, you will learn strategies for writing the issue and argument essays on the GMAT and GRE and how readers score essays. Particular emphasis will be placed on how to approach the various types of questions on the argument essay. You will learn by brainstorming the argument and ways to support it, learning appropriate grammar structures, and analyzing models of argument essays.

Podcasting for Pronunciation

This class offers an opportunity to practice oral skills while producing an international music podcast that everyone at the Language Institute can enjoy.  In addition, we will learn the basics of using sound editing software.

iBT TOEFL Preparation: Skills & Practice—Reading

Improve your reading skills. Practice reading academic passages and answering questions that measure your ability to understand and analyze the meaning of the passages. Practice multiple-choice question types to measure your ability to understand main ideas, details, inferences, discourse, and vocabulary. Practice new question types in which you demonstrate what you have learned or read by completing a table or a narrative summary, or by choosing a correct paraphrase of a reading.

Work on improving your speaking skills. Practice three kinds of speaking tasks. In the first task, you are asked to state explain and support your answer to a question using personal knowledge and experience. In the second task, you are asked to read a short passage and listen to a short talk, then answer a question combining information from the talk and reading passage. In the third task, you listen to a short lecture or conversation, and are asked to summarize key ideas from the talks. Work on your ability to use clear, smooth, sustained speech for overall intelligibility and language use that demonstrates control of grammar and word choice, and organization.

Work on improving your writing skills by learning about the two kinds of writing required on the iBT TOEFL. In the first writing task, you are asked to respond to a question using personal knowledge and experience. In the second task, you are asked to read an academic passage and listen to a lecture. Then, you answer a question discussing the key points in the lecture and explain how they relate to the information in the reading passage. Outside of class, you may work on writing essays, which the instructor will score.

Work on improving your listening skills. Practice listening to short and long conversations, academic discussions, and academic lectures. Focus on note-taking skills, idiomatic vocabulary use, and grammar structures that are typically found in spoken English. Practice new question types that measure your ability to understand a speaker's attitude or meaning.

Survival English 101

In this class, you will learn basic English and slang expressions that are common in everyday American English. Each week you will learn common vocabulary and practice different scenarios such as ordering in a restaurant, paying bills, and resolving conflicts. This course will help you have better insight into American culture and more confidence to communicate with Americans in real-life situations.
